Dubai boat show 1The Dubai International Boat Show 2023 has come to an end. Now it is time to take stock, certainly positively, of what has become one of the most important international events in the yachting world

Thousands of enthusiasts from all over the world passed through the port of Dubai, looking forward to enjoying the more than 200 boats on display and the show that saw as many as 44 launches of new proposals and the latest in design and technology.

In addition to boats many other activities entertained visitors, including diving demonstrations, water sports shows, seminars and workshops, live music shows, fishing competitions and much more.

But the Dubai International Boat Show 2023 was, of course, first and foremost the perfect opportunity for the world’s leading yacht brands to showcase their most luxurious vessels at the Dubai harbor, as well as for the rest of the industry: here, in fact, more than 1,000 of the biggest names and brands in the marine industry showcased their latest innovations.

3Beneteau, dubai BehneMar Yachting, De Antonio, Ferreti, Gulf Craft, Lagoon, Ocean Independence, Riva, Sanlorenzo, Silent Yachts, Sunreef and Sunseeker Gulf among many others unveiled brand-new and innovative vessels.

Amongst the incredible line-up, the largest in both length and price tag is the Independence’s 68m Soaring, valued at Dhs350 million. UAE yacht-maker Gulf Craft officially unveiled its highly-anticipated Majesty 111 and the surprise new addition, Nomad 101. Abeer Al Shaali, Deputy Managing Director at Gulf Craft, said “We saw a huge influx of crowds, which was really exciting. The two yachts we brought to the show have already been sold, and we have many serious leads looking at making purchases “.

Silent Yachts, the world’s first ocean-going production yachts powered by solar energy, was also reported an impressive event. “Everyone is wild about our product because it’s the first electric yacht in the world,Ahmed Almousawi, General Manager of Silent Yachts said.“Many people do not know that such a thing already exists, yet we have 16 of them in the water worldwide and 26 currently in build. Many people are proud to bring this product to the region, and we have several interested clients that are planning to visit our headquarters in Mallorca to take things forward We are proud to bring this product to the region, and we have several interested clients that are planning to visit our headquarters in Mallorca to take things forward”.

2Italian yacht manufacturing company Azimut returned to Dubai International Boat Show this year, exhibiting the Gulf Premiere Fly 68, the Fly 53, and larger vessels the S10 and Grande 27M.

The Dubai International Boat Show is an appointment we can’t miss. We have created an extremely robust and widespread network of professional and exceptionally high-level service points, ensuring we offer our yacht owners outstanding, dedicated service,” Enrico Chiaussa, Azimut Head of Sales for Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa said.

Another debut came via BehneMar Yachting, as the superyacht consultancy and official dealer for Cigarette boats in the Middle East introduced the region’s first Cigarette power performance boat, a move that Tim Trenker, Chief Executive Officer, BehneMar Yachting predicts will “rock the market in the weeks, months and years to come.” He said: “We are very pleased with Dubai International Boat Show. I see a lot of further growth potential, and I forecast that we’ll soon be using both sides of the marina – one just for superyachts and one for yachts under 34 or 40 metres ”.

The show’s new location was also welcomed by Bush & Noble, regional distributor for Sunseeker Gulf, which is exhibiting Sunseeker 74 and Sunseeker 65. Brett Noble, Co-Founder of Sunseeker Gulf, said:“The event so far has been fantastic. As Bush & Noble, we’ve been attending the Dubai International Boat Show for 10 years and we’ve seen the evolution over that period – particularly since the show moved to Dubai Harbour. This year, we’re getting a lot more feedback and buyers than we have in the past. In fact, we’ve had at least half a dozen serious leads in 24 hours ”.

4Other new vessels launched at the event by some of the world’s most notable superyacht brands included the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62, De Antonio D46, Ferretti Yachts 780, Lagoon Catamarans SEVENTY 8, Riva 88’ Folgore, and the Riviera 72.

In addition, Sanlorenzo Yachts premiered the 110 as well as the SL86, and Sunreef Yachts revealed its 60 Power Eco and its Eco 80.

In short, an event that everyone really enjoyed: the producers who saw their work fully valued, as well as the industry insiders who were able to enjoy the event for five totally immersive days. And of course the thousands of people who passed through the booths, experienced the adrenaline-pumping offerings of the event and all the spectacle associated with it.

An outstanding event that laid the foundation for doing even better at the next occasion, in 2024, where Dubai will surely delight us with many more surprises.

Tommaso Spadolini has unveiled the first details of a true floating masterpiece: a 90-metre sports superyacht with very distinctive lines resulting from a joint collaboration with the owner that led to an interior configuration and exterior styling that guarantee high levels of usability.

We have worked closely with the owner and his representatives to create a really head-turning design that responds to his three key requirements without sacrificing one iota of practicality – stated Tommaso SpadoliniCapable of speeds around 20 knots, this superyacht had to have the external form of a fast boat: something we have achieved with the strongly curved lines that dip towards the stern. Then we have emphasized proximity to the water by creating a lot of focus around the two-deck beach club and using lots of glass. The internal configuration of the boat has been carefully studied to create the maximum privacy for the owner”.

Tommaso Spadolini 90 metri concept

Fast lines were a key part of the brief, and from the first hand-drawn sketches, Spadolini conceived a powerful shear for the main deck, emphasized by two strong convex lines for the owner’s and upper decks. The necessary straight lines for bulwarks and decks are cleverly concealed by powerful, flowing curves that peak amidships before sweeping down towards the generous beach club.

The brief required two further key features: the design of the yacht should give guests the sense that they are in close contact with the sea. And it should enable the owner to maintain a high degree of privacy from other guests and crew.

At 90 metres long, Tommaso Spadolini’s design is distinguished by a large beach club area in the stern which, arranged over the lower and main decks, includes a 150 sq. m lounge area with twin fold-down balconies, a gym and bar, a sauna, massage and relaxation area. The bathing platform itself amounts to 65 sq. m and the main aft cockpit above fills another 150 sq. m, flooded with natural light thanks to the shorter overhangs of the deck above.

90 metri concept

The beach club also includes an infinity pool measuring 7 x 3m with a glazed bottom, suspended over the bathing platform, offering a unique view of the horizon. The connection to the water is further emphasized by the balconies outside the sliding doors of the upper lounge. The use of glass throughout the main and upper decks with full-height windows is also distinctive.

Attention to privacy was another of the key demands from the outset of this project, and Tommaso Spadolini has made every effort to meet this need, creating a dedicated owner’s deck and closely controlling access via stairs and lift. There are dedicated his n’ hers bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, a wine cellar, and smoking room with humidor.

Discretion and privacy were a big part of the brief – explained Spadolini – We have developed enclosed structures for the stairs and separate crew access so that the owner can be completely cocooned on demand. Sound absorbing materials would be used in doors and bulkheads to ensure total confidentiality, without compromising on the really lavish series of private spaces.”

An outdoor lounge area and a saloon with a swimming pool in the bow complete the layout of the owner’s deck, the atrium of which can be delimited with specially insulated doors to prevent access to the owner’s flats and ensure maximum privacy. With regard to the cabins, it is impossible not to underline the size of the owner’s suite, which features a large bed with a 270-degree view towards the bow and a private lounge area.

The bow area also features six spacious guest cabins, including two VIP cabins. Forward again, there is room for a huge toy garage, which runs to a jet tender and multiple jet skis. The main tender garage can accommodate a 9m boat. A lounge area and a Jacuzzi are located aft, where several options for outdoor entertaining have been developed, including a barbecue area and an outdoor dining table.

Tommaso Spadolini’s design is a perfect combination of elegance and technology, with a focus on privacy and connection to the sea. Once completed, this 90-metre yacht will undoubtedly be a jewel that, whether at sea in the waves or in harbour, will be able to stand out.

We have spent many hundreds of hours refining the design of this yacht,” said Spadolini. “It is now ready to move to the next engineering stage. Though we are currently studying some larger designs for potential clients, this is the biggest yacht we have brought to such a stage of detail. It is very dear to me, like a member of the family.”

The new jewel in the Mar.Co family, the R-Evolution 26, has been defined by its own manufacturers as a real milestone.

Designed as the ultimate expression of design and aimed at achieving great cruising performance, it is a tender that offers great comfort on board. This chase boat gives wonderful sensations to the driver, while offering plenty of space for recreational activities.

The design is elegant and modern. This is immediately visible in the quality of the sofa finishes, the wide rear decks and the black T-Top. Every corner hides a surprise, a space, a chrome, a story, which at Mar.Co began in 1974.

In 8 metres of length the Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 encapsulated the best of its boatbuilding experience, enhanced in this case by the power of a Mercury 450R that made my test even more exciting: let’s see why.

MAR:CO R-EVOLUTION 26 Sea Trial

I approach the test of the new MAR.CO R-Evolution 26 with a certain amount of expectation – I have been waiting since 2021 to get on board.  I enjoy every single step leading to the helm station and notice, right from the start, that it is easy to move around and there is a comfortable seat waiting for me, which immediately makes me feel at ease. In this position you really do have the choice of steering while standing or sitting.

As we leave the port I notice that this tender responds perfectly to the controls, manoeuvres are decidedly simple, even though we only have one outboard motor. I accelerate and at about 2,000 rpm the wake is already coming off and the boat gets up on plane. The hull glides over the water effortlessly.

At 3,500 revs we’re at 23 knots, an ideal speed for moving with ease between the superyacht and the chosen destination; fuel consumption is also very low, just 43.5 litres per hour, ensuring a great range for the craft.

Outside the port the sea is very rough, which is the ideal condition for testing this ‘super tender’ in harsh conditions. I put the throttle down, the waves are over a metre and a half, but they do not bother the hull of the MAR.CO R-Evolution 26, which surprisingly tackles the swells at high speed smoothly and, above all, without even a splash reaching the boat. I still speed up and, at 5,500 rpm, I manage to touch the remarkable top speed of 48.5 knots: truly impressive in these conditions.

I tackle a series of tight turns and counter-turns, this inflatable is incredible, it’s as agile as a jet ski and as stable as an oil tanker! Even the acceleration is amazing, from 0 to 20 knots in two and a half seconds, that’s super racing performance.

There is little more to add: high-performance, elegant but above all extremely safe. This tender is not only ideal for fast cruising, it is also a real water toy.

The MAR.CO R-Evolution 26 in detail

At 8.02 metres long and 3.08 metres wide, the dominant colours of this version of the Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 are white and red, interrupted only by a carbon black stripe on the two tubulars. Obviously this chase boat can be customized as desired although, I must admit, I really like this combination. The Mercury 450R also fits in nicely, the matching colouring giving it a decidedly sporty touch.

In the middle of the boat, a beautiful fiberglass-made T-Top is reminiscent of the one on the R-Evolution 35, with two carefully designed storage compartments and a modern-style dashboard that matches the T-shaped seat and the very elegant white footrest.

The manufacturing quality of this inflatable, designed by Federico Gerna, is very high and can be seen in every detail: from the handrails to the finishes, right down to the large rear decks that house a practical retractable ladder, equipped with handles to make getting up from the water more comfortable. Everything here is studied down to the smallest detail.

Spaces are equally impressive. The MAR.CO R-Evolution 26 is in fact approved for as many as 14 people! On the transom there is room for an outboard up to 450 hp, like the one we tested today. The stern platforms are wide, with a locker under the one on the right, ideal for storing fins and masks.

There are also six spacious compartments between the stern and bow, a toilet with a dedicated tank hidden under the front seat of the helm console, fires, a fridge and a table in the middle of the stern that disappears in a flash, leaving room for the large sundeck. Relaxation is guaranteed everywhere.

In short, a chase boat that is not just a tender, but a versatile craft, with which you can indifferently disembark in the port or hang around all day, moving from one bay to another.

For the third year running Sacs Tecnorib, the brand that has set new trends in the industry by inaugurating the Maxi Rib era, was the protagonist of the ‘chase boats’ segment at the Monaco Yacht Show, a unique opportunity to showcase a range that seems to fit the needs of this sector perfectly.

Monaco is the Superyacht Show. The concentration of skippers and owners is unique in the world, and for Sacs Tecnorib the percentage of owners using our products as Chase Boats is great, – Andrea Loro, Sales Director at Sacs Tecnorib, told us during the event – So the fact that we are here in such a strategic location also gives us excellent potential. This is the third year that we have been in this situation with our booth and we have always achieved excellent results“.

Sacs Tecnorib Andrea Loro Monaco

Montecarlo is certainly the ideal place to meet owners, gather important information also for future developments and live the experience to the full, following, among other things, a concept that Sacs knows well and that has a name all its own: the Sacs Experience.

Sacs Experience goes hand in hand with the market. – continues Andrea Loro – While 10 years ago customers were looking for a specific product, today we sell an experience instead.

Sales are very cross-sectional, the customer is looking for a product in which he or she recognizes himself or herself: beautiful, stylish, and guaranteeing a complete on-board experience with ample sunbathing spaces combined with shaded relaxation areas where he or she can listen to music, have a cool drink, and spend quality time with loved ones and friends. The brand, of course, is also important, with its reputation and product type, but in the end it is always the aesthetic taste that drives.

sacs tecnorib rebel 47 outboards

So the fact that we have launched this Rebel line, which is a sort of middle ground between our core business, i.e. the maxi tender/maxi RIB of which we are world leaders, and a more traditional boat, has brought many customers closer to the space and comfort of a luxury boat, but with an ‘aggressive RIB’ aspect.

This has decreed the success of the Rebel range, which was born in 2017 and already boasts three models, with the fourth on the way.

Today experience is sold as I said. To make a comparison it’s like buying a dress that you like, you look for something that looks good; well, in the case of yachting, this means finding what best suits your individual desires and expectations”.

Today Sacs Tecnorib joins the Monaco Yacht Show as a well-established company, with the mentality of an industry leader and a strength that enables it to deliver high-end Maxi Ribs that are appreciated the world over. But the way up to here has been a long one, a path made up of experiences that blend together, of daily work and of skilled workers who take their talents to the extreme in these models.

The path to get here has been long. – reiterates the Sales Director of Sacs Tecnorib – Sacs was founded in 1989, then acquired in 2004 by the Laserline group, and from there, thanks also to a series of collaborations with important brands in the automotive sector, such as Abarth, Ferrari and Jaguar, we have always tried to position the brand a little outside the traditional, exploring other worlds, always linked to luxury”.

Andrea Loro Sacs 11 Limousine
Sacs 11 Limousine

All this has meant that the expectation created by the brand has also allowed us to approach very high-level customers with a product that meets their expectations. More and more customers are coming in with their own idea of style and colour, to the extreme of bespoke RAL, just as more and more owners want the tender to match the colour of their superyacht, to blend in with its style”.

I only had one question left to ask Andrea Loro, a much more personal one, but one whose answer I believe encapsulates much of the enthusiasm that oozes from his expression: ‘What does working at Sacs Tecnorib and being here in Monaco mean to you?’

” I am happy to be at Sacs. I am surrounded by young people who keep me young, pushing me to keep up. The nature of the product brings me face to face with a wonderful world, that of luxury, with case histories made up of really fascinating people and stories. This is an aspect that reaches its peak here in Monaco, which is also why we simply cannot miss it”.

Ferretti Group was one of the undisputed protagonists at the Monaco Yacht Show, presenting the New Ancona Super Yacht Yard projects including the fantastic new 54-metre Riva, alongside a remarkable fleet featuring the two world premieres CRN M/Y RIO and Riva 130’ Bellissima, plus Custom Line 140’,

Also on show at the event were CRN M/Y CIAO, Custom Line Navetta 37 and Riva 110’ Dolcevita, as well as Wally’s innovative wallywind130 and wallywind150 projects.

We come to Monaco more beautiful and solid than ever, or perhaps I should say as strong as steel, which is the main material used for the masterpieces built by our Super Yacht Yard in Ancona. Our investments in the large yachts segment are paying off handsomely and I’m pleased to announce the sale of two CRN yachts, one 85 metres in length and the other 70 metres,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. We are the only yacht-building Group with a range spanning 8 to 90 metres and as a boat lover myself, I really do understand our owners’ enthusiasm when they enter the Ferretti Group boutique. My own eyes light up too when I see our fleet.

Ferretti Group Monaco Yacht Show CRN MY RIO 62m

Ferretti Group is therefore constantly growing. The other main protagonist at the event is the Super Yacht Yard in Ancona. Covering almost 77 thousand square metres, the yard currently has 15 yachts under construction for the CRN, Riva, Pershing and Custom Line brands. The group has also announced the acquisition of two companies that are part of its supply chain: Masello Srl and Fratelli Canalicchio SpA.

The Super Yacht Yard of Ancona brought to Monaco CRN M/Y RIO, the new 62-metre yacht that the company itself defines as “the expression of an evolved and contemporary living concept in which comfort is taken to the next level by carefully selected details, with an alternation of precious materials and specially devised colour schemes”.

But there was also great expectation for the other models on display, such as the Custom Line 140′, the largest yacht ever built by the brand and presented at the last edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, and the world première Riva 130′ Bellissima, which in 40 metres sums up all the class, style and greatness of Riva Yachts. What better gift could there be on the occasion of the brand’s 180th anniversary?

And then there were also 13 luxury partners that accompanied Ferretti Group throughout the Show, including Range Rover, Dolce and Gabbana (who sign the Group’s uniforms), Lavazza, and many others.

In short, Ferretti Group was an absolute protagonist at the Monaco Show, but we are certain that other surprises will certainly come soon.

In the wonderful setting of Torre San Marco, the Vandutch 32 – an iconic boat, almost an artwork- was presented to the most authoritative nautical press. The location was ideal because, in the waters of Lake Garda surrounding Torre San Marco, formerly owned by Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, the anti-submarine motorboat (M.A.S.) was moored for a long time, whose name, in the mouth of the Vate, became “Memento Audere Semper“. Daring, always daring, and this Vandutch 32 knows it well, even if she were exhibited at the Pompidou in Paris or at Modern Art in New York.

The lines, distributed along a length of 9.81 meters and a width of almost 3 meters, are sleek and reminiscent of those boats that, with just a few pencil strokes, manage to express incomparable charm and class, enhanced by superior performance. The Vandutch 32 is powered by a Volvo V8 430-CE petrol engine but options include twin Volvo 2.8 6-cylinder diesel engines, a Volvo D6-380/DPI diesel and two Volvo D4-300/DPI diesel engines. The cockpit is equipped with a 12-inch display but the owner can also opt for a larger 16-inch one, always compatible with Garmin electronics. The deck and hull are in vacuum-infused vinylester resin. At the helm, the refined Silvertex upholstery, a material that ensures quick drying, and in the service area there is a lovely ceramic sink. Looking at her is looking at the whole, because the allure of this boat blends with the context as if it were a protagonist, but without displaying any selfish narcissism.

Vandutch 32: penetrating beauty

More than the vanishing lines, it is the geometric form that stands out in this luxury boat, whose physicality is summed up in a syncretism of sober colours, from beige to golden sand, which are truly perfect for portraying a slender absoluteness stretching out over the water, where the boat merges as if it were an integral part of it, becoming an exclusive element that joins it with mature style.

When trying to describe it, the boat almost arouses circumspection and respect: “any adjective is not worth the emotion and effectiveness of seeing it in the water”.

Gigi Servidati and Fabio Planamente (Chairman and CEO of Cantieri del Pardo respectively) softly described the boat during the press conference: “it is a very special object because it is built with very fine materials. We have worked hard on the weights, which are limited to just 3,000 and 400 kilos, giving the boat great performance…”.

Beauty, however, is not just a matter of details: it is fleeting and thrives on the instant that changes with the speed. So the Vandutch 32 responds to the canons of beauty by distorting them, and creates its own idea of aesthetics which has attracted owners to whom “all production for next year has already been sold”.

Vandutch

As far as distribution is concerned, the enfant prodige Vandutch, recently absorbed by the Italian Cantiere del Pardo, has decided to “go beyond the normal distribution channels, so the project is ambitious and has three perfect locations for this type of boat. We are opening Vandutch Centres in Miami, Saint Tropez and the Balearics, a fairly new concept in the nautical world. These are mono-brands where the customer is pampered, revered and looked after in all aspects, from the purchase of the boat to management, requirements and services, which are really important for an object of this kind. In Saint Tropez we will also have something new, a location right inside the Old Port”.

There is amazement around the Vandutch 32. And Lake Garda has welcomed another secret that has now been told.

Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport Sea Trial

magazzu-mx-12-gs-popaThere are shipyards that succeed in creating unique lines from a few traits. Those are the boats that, even from a distance, you can recognize at first glance. And this is certainly the case of Cantieri Magazzù which has been manufacturing first-class beautiful boats for over 60 years.

An indisputable example of this comes from the Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport that, with a few yet clever lines, gives an overall view that is simultaneously classic and modern. The stern of the boat is a display of planes that, embellished by round outlines, lead to the sun pad from the wonderful boarding platform, cleverly positioned just above the waterline. This area, symmetrically decorated by  two retractable bathing ladders and lit up by two led spotlights, shows how attention to detail is certainly not an optional extra for Magazzù.

The carbon T-top and the stainless steel handrail harmoniously complement the structure of the large Maxi Rib and offer the possibility to accommodate additional light sources that, with great arrangement technique, complete the well-finished overall lighting design of the boat that, at night, frames and enhances the beauty of the craft, by elevating it to extraordinary levels.

magazzu-mx-12-gran-sport-t-top

However, only few people know that Cantieri Magazzù is a real idea factory with a long tradition of innovation in the study and manufacture of high-performing hulls that has give rise to a ling series of patents that, still today, enable this shipyard to stand out in the modern boating industry landscape.

You will certainly understand how anxious we were to climb on board one of these boats that, beyond the unquestionable charm, we wanted to test at sea.

The occasion didn’t take long to come when, with the approach of the season of boat shows, the shipyard would have to bring a Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport from the port of Genoa to Cannes Yachting Festival. The occasion was made even more interesting by the chance (for us) absence of the skipper, an absence that allowed us to manage the transfer autonomously, since the launch of the boat, after its arrival by ship at Genoa.

The following is the report of what happened.

100 miles on board the MX 12 Gran Sport

magazzu-mx-12-gran-sport-varo-The day has just dawned when we get the port of Genoa and we enter, without difficulty, in the complex mercantile world of the industrial port that, as a crossroads of an endless amount of goods, is already swarming with life.

We get the plane side of the ship and see the cradle hosting the MX 12 Grand Sport that, with its tubes deflated and covered by a protective cover, is waiting for us.

It’s a prime opportunity to study the hull. It is no often you see a twin-step hull that, originally used for the skids of seaplanes, contributes to protect the boat surface from water sprays and develop more speed thanks to lower friction on the water.

The hull of the Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport benefits from an extensive use of kevlar, carbon and epoxy resins, combining the avantges of the step with extraordinary sturdiness. Of course, this construction is more complex and more expensive than the traditional ones but the buyer of a luxury item like this expects the most, even in terms of structural features.

The model we’re about to test is fitted with twin diesel Volvo D4 sterndrive engines, 300hp each. The overall 600 horsepower delivered by these engines represents the minimum engine power recommended for this inflatable boat that is offered in many different options, the most powerful of which consists of 1,000hp for a top speed of 60 knots.

After one hour, the launch is finally completed, our Maxi Rib touches the water and we climb on board. The tubes are totally deflated but the boat, simply leaning on the hull, is already very stable.

I activate the battery master switch, I start engines and look for the inflator. I find it immediately since it is perfectly installed in one of the cockpit compartments, already wired and without any sort of annoying “flying” electric cables to connect to the batteries. The corrugated cable is very long and reaches, without difficulty, the 6 inflating valves that guard the tube sections. I start it and, in less than 15 minutes, the boat is perfectly inflated: it’s really convenient and fast!

Rotta-Genova-CannesI re-tract all moorings and steer to leave the port. I adore diesel sterndrive engines because they are easy to handle and allow to maneuver in restricted waters very easily, even using only throttles.

We go out the port and plan our route to Cannes; we have more than 100 miles to sail, the overage level of the fuel tank is about 65% and, for safety reasons, we have to stop for fuel. The route envisages an approach to the coast in the vicinity of Andora, after about 50 miles; so, we’ll keep an eye on our consumption and will stop for fuel there.

I speed up slowly and, at about 12 knots, the Magazzù MX 12 gently starts planing while, simultaneously, I realize how particular this hull is. The twin step immediately supports the boat, by determining its trim and providing the overall movement with considerable sailing comfort.

I get back on course and I accelerate to 18/20 knots. At this speed, fluidity is great, the Maxi RIB slightly lowers its bow and seems to navigate on an air cushion. I watch the consumption indicator and I realize that we’re traveling at 23/24 knots with a fuel consumption of just 40 l/h, that is 1.7 l/nm.

-gran-sport-provaNow, it’s time to test this hull that makes me so curious. I invite my traveling companion to find a safe place to sit in and I start to perform a series of increasingly tighter turns. The MX 12 reacts brilliantly, she tilts, she holds trajectory, remaining always perfectly stable even when I accelerate strongly.

The only reactions I obtain are an increase in the boat inclination and, at the same time, a satisfied smirk on the face of Giovanna who, with tens of thousands of miles and several Atlantic crossings in her experience, is certainly not intimidated by the “bent with tubes in water” which this Maxi Rib is subject to.

Then, we get back on course and test various cruising speeds and, in the end, we opt for a speed of about 32-32 knots. At this speed, the sense of safety is total and we feel like we’re traveling at 10 knots less. The protection against wind offered by the console (and its windshield) is remarkable and we have to sit on rear seats to realize how fast we are sailing.

Consumption confirms, better than anything else, the quality of waterlines that enable us to move at 60 l/h, about 2 l/nm. An extraordinary performance for any boat, not only for a sporty one like this.

The sea is almost flat/smooth, which is the ideal condition to test the top speed. So, I push throttles down, I adjust the trim and the GPS marks 45.1 knots that, considering that we are on board a boat fitted with the mininum engine power option available, confirm the sporty soul of this boat.

gran-sport-navigazione-2Miles go fast at this speed and the twin Volvo D4 engines show no signs of fatigue, temperature and fuel consumption remain stable and, in such a smooth sea, we enter the port of Andora for fuel.

Entering a marina with the Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport is a very particular experience, it’s like arriving in a square with a Ferrari: you can’t go unnoticed. All eyes are on the particular refined lines of this boat that provokes admiration at the very first glance.

At the filling station, it’s our turn, so we come alongside the pier and take less than 200 liters of fuel. This way, both fuel tanks reach 98%, confirming the overage consumption previously assumed.

At the filling station, it’s our turn, so we come alongside the pier and take less than 200 liters of fuel. This way, both fuel tanks reach 98%, confirming the overage consumption previously assumed.

Acceleration is inebriating, the two diesel engines are great and, within just 10 seconds, we reach 30 knots; in 16 seconds, we touch 40 knots! I can just imagine what it would be to push throttles down with 50% more power: an unforgettable experience, I’m sure.

We get back on course and stabilize speed at about 33-34 knots; at 2,900 rpm, the sea  is very flat and sailing this way is spectacular. While we approach to Cannes, the traffic of yachts headed for the boat show is heavy; in short, we are all sailing towards the same destination.

-gran-sport-yacht

So (it is inevitable) the first lateral waves come. It’s a play we can’t miss. We slow down at 27-28 knots and start to cross the wakes of the other boats. The Magazzù MX 12 Gran Sport merely realizes that and cuts through waves without shocks or deceleration.

Then, we spot a superyachtsailing to Cannes at 16-18 knots; presumably, it is almost 40 meters long and its passage provokes a very high and steep wave. I enter, with no hesitation, its wake in order to jump the “easy” side of the water mountain, from inside to outside.

We are very close to the wave and, only at the last second, I realize its real dimensions. What we are confronted with is a “ramp” of one meter and half in height; I am about to cross it at 25 knots, I feel my hands clinging to the helm in preparation for the impact, an impact that, however, never comes.

The Magazzù enters the wave and rises without shocks; of course, we jump (and much) but we touch down with no shocks. The hull of the MX 12 touches the water with extreme softness and ease. I accelerate and we quickly overcome the yacht, I turn around to ask Giovanna if she has enjoyed it but she looks at me and seems to ask: “that’s all?”.

magazzu-mx-12-gran-sport-prova-2I smile and turn around the large yacht, we enter the wake from the steep side of the wave and jump again; the boat, again, remains imperturbable. We touch down, turn again and accelerate to 30 knots, again inside the wake of the superyacht and, at less than 20 meters from its stern, we face, without slowing down, the huge wave. The Magazzù MX 12 jumps and, this time, we raise really a lot, then we touch down and, sure, this time we have perceived the impact with water but it was soft and progressive, the level of comfort and safety offered by this boat is undoubtedly high.

By curbing our instincts, we get back on course, we’re getting close to our destination. Giovanna and me, we have split the helm several times during these 100 miles, for pure pleasure and not by need. Steering this Maxi Rib doesn’t make you feel tired, the drive is relaxing and time goes fast, you hardly even notice that.

One mile from  the port, we find a rush of yachts waiting to be docked at the quays of the Cannes Yachting Festival. We advance slowly and enter the welcoming arms of Vieux Port while, again, we witness the spectacle that the beauty of this boat provokes all around.

Faces that turn, arms that rise and point at us; even operators can’t resist the charm of our Magazzù that, in her white livery, gets her berth elegantly and stops.

We turn around for a final look before leaving the berth on foot. She is there, beautiful, ready to welcome all the visitors that, from tomorrow, will crowd the jetties of this extraordinary boat show. Visitors that – it is not difficult to predict it – will be inevitably attracted by her refined beauty.

Test Conditions: smooth/almost flat sea, no wind, two passengers on board. 70% water capacity; 95% fuel capacity ,

carena-768x512After the success of the 42, TecnoRib presents the brand-new Pirelli 35 walkaround, a worthy heir of sportiness and elegance with more moderate aesthetics, liveability and performance.

The sportiness of lines has always characterised the well-known Pirelli inflatable boats built by TecnoRib but the Pirelli 35, exclusively in water for the first time for The International Yachting Media, denotes a stylistic transformation dictated by the intuitions of the historic Swedish studio Mannerfeld Design Team, which penned some among the most interesting projects in the nautical (and not only) scene. The designer’s goal was to give a certain lightness and grace to boats that have always been distinguished by muscly and sharp lines in a perfect synthesis between sportiness and elegance. In my opinion, a perfectly successful exercise in style: the Pirelli 35, in fact, stands out for the modernity and cleanliness of her lines.

Pirelli 35 Sea Trial

It’s a cold day with north wind in Liguria. The sea is rippled by a strong land breeze. Far from the coast, the heavy sea makes itself heard. These are the ideal conditions for a sea trial.

Pirelli-35-scia-in-mare

The two Mercruiser 300HP engines and the sterndrives take us out of the port. The noise is attenuated by the good insulation of the engine compartment. We test the performance of the Rib, which proves to be easy to drive and steer, soft on the waves and definitively dry despite the strong wind.

The two hull steps work properly, making navigation efficient while my knees have found an excellent balance, without compromising the lateral movement when turning so as to make the boat very safe.

Acceleration is progressive and exciting, as well as the extremely agile behavior in the tightest turns which produces important variations in lateral trim, but always very controlled and without cavitation effects on the propellers.

The central steering console is compact and well-sized, with a proper inclination of the tools. I have a feeling of excessive proximity of the throttle levers to the driving wheel which forces the pilot to a not too relaxed position.

pirelli_35-cabina-di-pilotaggioTwo sofas with folding seat accompany the console, leaving excellent space for normal builds. The hard top with large protective windshield has a sleek line and the stern support, with an accurate yet robust design, contributes to stylistic refinement. Many inflatable boats often have low habitability due to structures that, useful for the sturdiness of the hull, are however harmful to overall livability: the Pirelli 35, thanks to an in-depth study on deck dimensions, offers large, clean and uncluttuered walking surfaces, even in the side-decks that usually represent a critical point for Ribs.

Circulation on board is free and safe, thanks to some stainless steel handrails positioned on the sides, at the bow and around the bow sundeck. From midship to the bow, the bulwarks are high and protective. Featuring a length of 11 meters and a weight of over 8 tons, the Pirelli 35 is able to deliver excellent performance: a speed of over 47 knots, explosive acceleration and extraordianry evolutionary capacity.

Fuel consumption is resolutely slow: just 64 l/h (3.2 l/nm) at 3,000 rpm, with a range of almost 237 miles. Great, especially if you consider that the boat is powered by petrol (and not diesel) engines.

Exteriors

pozzetto-pirelli-35With a very Mediterranean and sporty character, the Pirelli 35 offers, as mentioned above, a well-sized bow sundeck and a generous stern sunbathing platform with adjustable backrest: when moved forward, it can be used as a headrest, leaving more room to the sundeck while, when folded aft, it acts as a backrest for the cockpit sofa. Although not new, the latter is a certainly effective solution.

Surrounded by two sofas, the cockpit can be used as both a living zone and a dining area: a three-section table, in fact, can be mounted on two aluminium legs that, when not in use, can be stored in special floor compartments.

The overall quality and sturdiness of the boat can also be perceived in the details: the table, for example, is rather heavy and sturdy like the thick fiberglass covers of the two side cabinets at the base of the column that supports the hard top. The two specular compartments hide a stainless steel sink on one side and a surface designed to mount a stove or barbecue on the other.

A drawer refrigerator completes the outdoor kitchen equipment. At the bow, there is a comfortable work area and a fiberglass fitting with an anchor locker covered with a rubber top with car tire notchign effect that, typical of Pirelli, is also re-proposed on the tubulars amidships. The locker is very clever in its arrangement: the Quick winch is placed on a shelf, leaving the chain drop with excellent depth. When at rest, the anchor remains cantilevered on the bow straight, integral with the sturdy stainless steel structure that supports it. Seen from the sea, it gives a stylistic effect of breaking lines, almost a point of interesting that captures attention.

Pirelli-35-coperta

Interiors

A smoked plesxigalls sliding hatch and three steps give access to the lower deck. There, you can find a single space with a double bed positioned towards the bow, scenically accompanied by two lateral shelves equipped with lighting. The asthetic refinement goes hand in hand with a certain ease of use: on the vanity unit, in fact, a crystal cup-shaped washbasin with design tap stands out.

Interni-pirelli-35-tecnoribSome doors hide an equal number of technical compartments that can also be used as storage compartmens for small objects; there’s plenty of storage space everywhere, even under the bed where, in fact, there are two useful lockers. A compartment with a hinged lid hides an electric toilet. At first glance, it seems to have been sacrificed in a corner, but, actually, it is very comfortable and well-sized.

The atmosphere of relaxation and brightness is emphasized not only by the warm tones of the wood and fabrics, in contrast with the white of the gelcoat, but also by the light that penetrates from the side portholes and the skylight. Below the aft sundeck, an immense engine room offers ample space for maintenance around the engines, with just a few systems mounted on the side walls, thus leaving additional useful space for the eventual assembly of bulky equipment such as the power generator.

In conclusion, the new Pirelli 35 has fully convinced us: the optimal use of space makes the passenger feel like he is on an inflatable boat much larger than 10.35 meters. Exiciting and performing, it’s perfect to be used as both a short-range coastal cruiser and a superyacht tender.

We already knew that the Magazzù MX-11 Coupé was a beautiful and elegant boat, a glance is enough to realize that. But that she was also able sail under any sea conditions was something we had to test.

For our sea trial, we chose to “fly” from Genoa to Monaco on board this “super RIB” which didn’t bat an eyelid even when faced with two meter high waves and which, after almost 100 miles at sea, left us the desire to cover at least as many.

100 miles on board the Magazzù MX – 11 Coupé

magazzu-mx-11-coupe-uscita-genovaThe Genoa Boat Show is coming to an end and the last day is running out. The Magazzù MX-11 Coupé is waiting for us to be transferred to Montecarlo where she is scheduled to take part to a new boat exhibition together with many other mega yachts.

It’s late to cover all the 100 miles that separate us from our destination, so we decide to spend the night at the Marina di Varazze. We hasten to load and stow all our bags (they are not few since we have been out for three days) and, after a refueling stop, we are ready to set sail.

The sea is perfect and, sailing at a speed of 30 knots, we reach our first destination in less than an hour. The only difficulty consists in dodging the many boats which enter and leave the port.

It has been a long day at the boat show and, after an unmissable fish dinner, we go to sleep.

The following day, we meet on the dock of the Marina di Varazze just before dawn. We start the two Volvo Penta V8 engines, 350 HP each, and switch the navigation lights on. The fuel tanks of the Magazzù MX-11 Coupé are full.

There are three of us on board and, after retracting moorings, we enjoy the most evocative moments of the day. The light of the rising sun timidly starts to illuminate a sea that, at the mouth of the port, offers only a few waves coming from afar.

We accelerate and head for Monaco. The shortest route envisages to coast every cape that stands between us and our destination. Weather forecasts exclude that the situation remains quiet and call for a rough-very rough sea with residual waves coming from the west.

As we leave the protection in the stretch of coast that divides Varazze from Celle, the sea, indeed, starts to get rough. We therefore decide to opt for a speed of around 25-27 knots which might enable us to sail in total safety in the waves that we imagine to meet. In fact, it’s still dark and we don’t see the horizon well. This is also the ideal speed for long-range transfers, the one that allows not to consume too much fuel.

-partenzaI’m not at the helm, mine is not the first turn but, from the bow and in the shadow, I see a high wave coming. I think it is 1.5-2 meters high. We are sailing fast, so I bend my legs to brace for impact and….and nothing, we land softly, just a few meters after the wave, as if there is an airbag between the hull and the surface.

It seems incredible but we have just performed a really nice “jump”.

We don’t slow down even not on the following waves which become higher and higher in the waters of Savona. The behaviour of the Magazzù MX-11 Coupé does not change and our backs remain relaxed.

Claudio Magazzù, who represents the second generation of the shipyard together with her sister Tina and his brother Renato, is on board with us. Claudio is an aeronautical engineer and gives us some explanaitations as to why this boat reacts so well to the impact with the water.

One of the reasons is that the hull “steps” which cut across the hull line are deep. Their function is to support the hull when the boat is on plane, deflecting water from the hull surface and letting air come in. This principle results into the creation of some air cushions that make the impact with the hull significantly softer.

The “steps” of the MX-11 are deep and specially designed to maximize this effect and we are appreciating their efficiency.

The sun rises as we sail close to Savona. The mountains, now visible, are covered by a thick cloud layer, which suggests that the north wind is coming.

At Capo Noli, the horizon is fully visible and the sea gets worse. Here, the bottom level is higher, the intervals between waves become shorter and the wave motion is more confused. I don’t waste time and I take the helm. I want to see how the boat does in such conditions.

-consolleSo, I fasten the safety lanyard and, given the good performance achieved so far, I dare. I think I can go on sailing at 20 knots at least, so I adjust the throttle accordingly.

Just the time to reach the right speed and trim and a wave appears in the bow. It is steep and I don’t know if it is the first one of a long series.

The movement I exert on the helm goes automatically, I try to face the wave from the loof. In such conditions and at this speed, the Magazzù MX-11 shows an excellent course stability but, as the helm moves and the angle of incidence of the hull changes, the situation becomes different.

The boat becomes as manoeuvrable and responsive as a go-kart.

Claudio makes a very clear comparison, the one between airliners and fighters which, after all, travel like us through fluid dynamics. The former are designed to be stable yet hard to maneuver; the latter, instead, are made deliberately unstable in order to be able to maneuver in very tight spaces.

The secret is to find the right balance between the two things and this Maxi Rib, thanks to its special hull design, has really succeeded in doing that.

Having calibrated my feeling with the boat, I can have fun playing with waves. I go up and down with great naturalness without never slowing down and, despite having to maneuver, I do not deviate from the ideal route. I spend an hour this way, I don’t get tired. I’m still having fun.

Meanwhile, the north wind blowing from the mountains finally starts to lower the waves.

Now, I can speed up to cover our last miles at 35 knots.

Comfort is great, I do not feel the cold air on my chest and, protected my the steering console, I enjoy my comfortable driving position. The deck remains perfectly dry, despite the wind.

My two travel companions start to enjoy navigation, one sitting in the stern, the other lying on the cabin bed: he is even sleeping, totally undisturbed.

Sailing this way is a true pleasure; in fact, I leave the helm only at the last minute and reluctantly. I inspect the exteriors of the boat and I notice that no cushion has moved during the travel. I try to raise the cushions of the stern sun pad to see how they are secured to the structure and I realize that they are fitted with a functional system of sliding rails which efficiently prevent them from flying away.

We finally arrive in Monaco. The city is ready to host the Super Yacht Show. In a quay crowded with many incredible yachts, we leave the keys to the driver who, with the Magazzù MX – 11 Coupé, will accompany many of the boat show visitors.

Looking at the clock, we make the last point of the our travel: three hours of navigation, at an average speed of 25 knots. Not bad in such sea and weather conditions. I even feel rested and ready to face a long day at the boat show.

This MX-11 Coupé is a great inflatable boat, I’m sorry to leave her.

The Magazzù MX – 11 Coupé

The starting point for a description of this boat is inevitably represented by its lines. Sleek and elegant, they are never too aggressive. The Mx-11 Coupé is not only eye-catching but is also able to continue to draw attention with a delicate balance of forms, colours and materials.

Another important strength lies in the attention that the shipyard has devoted to the design and creations of the details, including the smallest ones. To realize that, it is sufficient to stop and observe some special solutions like the side stainless steel gratings for engine ventilation, whose holes recall the logo of the shipyard.

The MX-11 Coupé combines a fascinating look, excellent seaworthiness and wide living spaces, both on and below deck, where we can find a comfortable cabin equipped with separate bathroom.

magazzu-mx-11-coupe-navigazioneThese characteristics make this Maxi RIB the ideal option  both to pamper the guests during a luxury day outing and to give unforgettable cruises to a couple that, after having caught the eyes of all while entering the port, can now stay on board, wrapped by the charm that only a Magazzù yacht can offer.

Moreover, the MX-11 we have tested is equipped with a beautiful carbon hard top that can extend towards the stern. This allows to cover even the central part of the cockpit and, therefore, the area that houses the wet bar positioned just behind the console, the removable dining table and the C-shaped seat placed next to the stern sun pad.

The result is a luxury open-space lounge where the guests can enjoy full protection from the sun. If, on the contrary, you want to sunbathe, the Magazzù MX-11 Coupé offers two sunbathing platforms. The forward one has a classic configuration with a very large pad.

The aft one, instead, deserves a separate discussion. Within just 11 meters, in fact, Magazzù has managed to create a true beach area, where the stern platform and the sun pad form an area where the contact with the sea is precious, elegant and unique.

Conclusions

The attribute ” Coupe” perfectly adapts to the MX-11 since this boat is luxury, sporty, easy-to-steer and elegant. If she was a car, she would certainly be a Bugatti.

If we could, we would even add the acronym “GT” because the boat also proved to be very comfortable and funny at sea, despite the harsh conditions and the long distance we covered.

Moreover, considering that the Magazzù MX-11 is also a cabin cruiser, we could define her as a true all-around that has no problems ix excelling in the multiple uses which she is designed for.

Even if the first reason why people choose Magazzù is that they fell in love with these boats at first sight.
